How to Care for Your Patio Umbrella
Your patio umbrella is designed to bring shade and style for many seasons. With a few simple steps, you can keep it looking vibrant and operating smoothly year after year.
- Daily & Weekly Use Tips
Practical actions that prevent early wear.
- Umbrellas are temporary shade structures – they are designed to be opened and closed withing seconds. There’s no reason to leave an umbrella open unless and until they are in use.
- Always close the umbrella when not in use — especially overnight or when winds exceed 10–15 mph.
- Tie off the canopy securely using the tie strap before leaving it unattended.
- Use a slipcover – slipcovers are inexpensive and will take the brunt of the ravages of nature when used diligently.
- Wipe away dirt, pollen, and bird droppings with a soft cloth and mild soap solution.
- Avoid sharp objects or dragging the canopy over rough surfaces.
- Cleaning the Canopy
- For Sunbrella® or solution-dyed acrylic fabrics:
Mix ¼ cup mild dish soap per gallon of lukewarm water.- Brush gently with a soft bristle brush.
- Rinse thoroughly.
- Air-dry fully before closing.
- For polyester or olefin fabrics:
Use mild soap, no bleach, and rinse well. - If machine-washed – remove your canopy from the machine immediately. Most grommets are manufactured of plated steel and will rust and stain your canopy if left moist.
- Frame & Mechanism Maintenance
- Crank-lifted patio umbrellas expand by forcing the lower hub “runner” up the pole until the runner hits a stop peg on the pole. Continuing to turn the crank will result in a snapped lifting cord (not covered by warranty) and render the umbrella inoperable.
- Tile-able umbrellas – we live in the northern hemisphere so the sun will never be directly overhead. Moreover, the sun changes its position by the minute. A tilt function adds utility as it adds an extra concern over safety for the user and the umbrella. The wind load on a tilted umbrella is significantly higher than when the canopy is flat. A damaged tilt mechanism is not covered under warranty.
- Clean aluminum or steel frames with warm soapy water; dry completely to prevent corrosion.
- Lubricate moving parts (crank gears, tilt joints, push buttons) every few months with silicone spray.
- Inspect hardware for loose screws, cracked ribs, or fraying cords; tighten or replace as needed.
- Wind & Weather Precautions
- Umbrellas are giant wind catchers not suitable for use when windy, storms, or while unattended.
- Use a weighted base appropriate to your umbrella size, 10x the pound/size ratio for a freestanding umbrella. For example, a 9’ patio umbrella requires 90 pounds of base. A table-inserted should have at least 60% the weight of a freestanding umbrella.
- Tilted canopies catch more wind—close them fully in gusty conditions.
- Patio Umbrellas are designed for shade protection only. Never use it as shelter in lightning or rain.
- Off-Season Storage
Important for winter and long-term protection.
- Clean and dry thoroughly before storage.
- Use a breathable storage cover (not plastic) to prevent mildew.
- Store upright in a dry, shaded location, or horizontally on a rack.
- If possible, remove the canopy and store it separately from the pole.
